How Much Does a Website Cost?

Want to know how much a website will cost for your business? Well, getting an answer from most agencies is like pulling teeth. You can’t usually find pricing on their website and if you get them on the phone, they say something like, “it depends. It could cost $20,000 to $50,000 depending on what you want” and then they want to schedule a long discovery call.

It does depend, and if you hang on until the end, I’ll go over all of that. Just wanting to know the cost so you can determine if your business can afford it? Read the next section and I’ll give you a quick straight answer.

How Much Does Building a Website Usually Cost?

For the average local business or small business website with 10 pages or less a new website will cost between $5,000 and $12,000. Sometimes you can find a one-person shop that can get the cost under $2,000. If the cost is under $1,000 it is almost always a red flag.

Two Types of Website Costs.

If this is your first time having a website designed for your business, you might think that there is only one fee associated with your website. You’ll actually need to budget for two types of costs related to your site.

1. One Time Costs

Your one time cost is what most people think of when they think about how much it will cost to design a website. It includes the cost of having the website designed, and often times it can also include creating a new logo or other one time brand polishing.

2. Recurring Website Costs

The other type of cost is a recurring cost. Recurring costs are unusually monthly or yearly fees for software or services related to keeping your website online, ranking well, and running without any errors. Let’s break this down so you can see each potential cost.

Website Domain Name ($2-$35 a year)

Your website’s domain name is the same as its URL. This is something that you’ll have to purchase every year. You’re allowed to purchase multiple years at once. This won’t usually give you a discount but it can help with your website’s Search Engine Optimization (SEO). So, it might help your site rank slightly better.

The most common ways to end a business domain are .com, .net, or .org. All of those will cost you somewhere between $2 a year to $20 a year. Large hosting companies will often discount the cost of purchasing a domain name for the first year. An average price is $12 a year.

Website Hosting ($20-$100 a month)

Web hosting is the most important recurring cost your website will have. We have put a lot of work researching and testing the best hosting setup for local businesses.

Web hosting refers to the server where your website is stored. You can think of it as a really powerful computer with a fast internet connection, where your website is installed.

You can get hosting for as little a couple of dollars a month. If you see that, RUN.

Hosting is too important to risk with the worst hosts. Hosting can affect your Search Engine Results Page (SERP) rankings, how fast your site loads, how many people will follow through and become your customer, and many other important things.

Software and Plugins ($50+ a month)

To protect and optimize your website, you’ll need to pay for additional online software every month. At a minimum, I suggest paying for a good spam filter, daily website backups stored in two or more places, uptime monitoring, screen recording software so you know what parts of your site are working well, and a CRM to track your potential customers.

Website Maintenance ($50-$100 a month)

Most local and small business websites will be fine with a maintenance plan that takes care of the core maintenance issues like testing backups, and updating software, plugins, themes, and WordPress core. This will usually run around $100 a month but you can occasionally find it for less.
